Historic Adaptive re-use of the Robinson Mill

The Robinson Mill in Oxford, Maine, stands as a testament to the thoughtful preservation and adaptive re-use of ahistoric gem. Formerly the Robinson Manufacturing Company, this mill was one ofthe last woolen mills in Maine, witnessing its final chapter in 2003. Theoriginal brick mill, constructed in 1865, served as the cornerstone of anarchitectural journey that spanned decades, marked by numerous additions andexpansions.

In this remarkable restoration project, the focus is on honoring the mill's storied past while creating a vibrantfuture. Most of the dated and non-essential additions are being thoughtfullyremoved to unveil the mill's historical character. A notable transformationoccurs in a significant U-shaped section of one of the warehouses, which isrepurposed into 30 inviting ground-floor housing units. The mill buildingitself becomes the centerpiece, accommodating 45 units that seamlessly blendmodern comfort with the mill's industrial legacy. For those who appreciate theallure of loft-style living, the boiler house is reimagined into twodistinctive loft units.

One of the project's most strikingfeatures is the creation of a beautiful courtyard located between the millbuildings and the transformed U-shaped warehouse building. This open andinviting space is designed to serve as a gathering point, allowing residents tosavor the serenity and charm of the outdoors. As the Robinson Mill undergoesthis remarkable transformation, it stands as a symbol of the timeless fusion ofhistory and modernity, offering seniors a unique and welcoming place to callhome.
